1923 Season 2 Finale: Love, Loss & Legacy – The Dutton Saga Ends in Tears

For the majority of “1923” Season 2, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) has desperately sought to reunite with her new husband Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), while the prodigal fighting machine has returned to the besieged Yellowstone Dutton ranch to save his uncle Jacob (Harrison Ford) and aunt Cara (Helen Mirren).

Spoiler alert! This narrative goes over the main aspects of the “1923” Season 2 finale.

Star-crossed lovers. Alex and Spencer conquered every imaginable difficulty on ships, vehicles, and trains before joyfully reuniting along freezing Montana railroad tracks in Sunday’s two-hour season finale (now available on Paramount+). Spencer jumps from his speeding train for a final run to his trapped, nearly freezing wife, and their euphoric reconciliation is so hot.

Like, actually hot. The harsh Montana winter for the Taylor Sheridan series was constructed with visual effects and false snowbanks on an Austin studio amid the sweltering Texas summer.

“Oh my God, it was like 100 degrees hot, the complete opposite of winter,” Schlaepfer, 30, recalls in a joint interview with Sklenar, 34, for USA TODAY. “We had to do this weird combination of shivering while actually drenched in sweat.”

We acknowledge the power of storytelling and cutting-edge technology because that long-awaited moment occurs. “It’s powerful,” Sklenar declares. “Running that last distance in the snow, you see how they’ve been fighting to find one another.”

Spencer finds that the new Dutton wife is pregnant. He gallantly packs up his weakened bride and sprints for warmth on the rails. Unorthodox acting was necessary.

“It was really funny,” says Sklenar, smiling as he remembers the dead serious scene. “I had to hold Jules and pretend to run in place, jostling her about. “I’ve never had to fake run for such an important, intense scene.”

Alexandra gave birth to John Dutton. But, which John Dutton?

Alex miraculously gives birth to their preterm son, whom they name John. This is the anticipated Big Bang in the Yellowstone-Dutton universe. Bet the ranch that this is John Dutton II, the father of John Dutton III, represented by Kevin Costner in the TV series “Yellowstone.”

“It’s enjoyable to think about. “That it connects to the entire world,” Schlaepfer says of infant John. She quickly adds that she is not verifying that the youngster is Costner’s TV daddy dressed in swaddling cloths. “The only person who could confirm that is Taylor Sheridan himself, out of his mouth.”

“John’s a popular name,” Sklenar continues, avoiding confirming his role as Costner’s television grandfather.

Who dies in the ‘1923’ finale?

The Dutton family’s newfound happiness is fleeting. Alex dies in the hospital while holding baby John, with Spencer sleeping next to her.

“They fall asleep together, and she drifts away,” Schlaepfer adds, noting that Ford and Mirren attended the moment out of respect. “There is no other way to express it. It hurt to film.

Spencer puts on his revenge mask to vent his frustrations on family archenemy Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), the ruthless developer and early downhill skiing visionary. Spencer, accompanied by Jacob, shoots Whitfield dead at his pastry-filled breakfast table.

Is it the end of ‘1923’?

Alex receives the greatest posthumous Dutton honor: a tombstone in the prestigious ranch cemetery reserved only for the top-tier relatives. Alex is an English aristocrat in Montana, yet she obtains a spot in the Deceased Dutton Hall of Fame.

“What an honor. Schlaepfer says, “I know everyone will be upset that (Alex) is buried in the Dutton family cemetery.”

Alex was a powerful character who gave birth to a key Dutton baby, deserted her aristocratic fiancé for Spencer, and created a drama of love.

Sheridan and Paramount Global had always intended to limit “1923” to two seasons before moving the tale on to the next chapter, “1944” (probably with an adult John Dutton II). So, for Ford, 82, and Mirren, 79, the Season 2 finale seems to be the end of the road. Jacob has previously admitted that he is retiring from ranching. Cara notes that baby John is “the future.” The ending cuts to an obscured shot of the never-remarried, elderly Spencer laying down beside his wife’s grave. Sklenar refuses to confirm the character’s demise.
