The second-generation Hyundai Nexo, unveiled at the Seoul Mobility Show in April 2025, represents a significant advancement in hydrogen fuel cell vehicle technology.
Hyundai Motor has unveiled its new Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel cell SUV worldwide. The Nexo’s second iteration is based on the 2024 Initium concept, and the hydrogen-powered SUV incorporates Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design language, separating it from both battery electric and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The Nexo will be released internationally in 2025, however the India debut is not likely to happen anytime soon due to a scarcity of hydrogen filling pumps.
Here are ten key facts about Hyundai Nexo innovative SUV:
Enhanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell System: The new Nexo features an improved fuel cell system, delivering 201 horsepower, an increase from the previous model’s 163 PS.
Extended Driving Range: It targets a driving range exceeding 700 kilometers (approximately 435 miles) on a single five-minute hydrogen refill, offering greater practicality for long-distance travel.
Innovative Design Language: The Nexo adopts Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy, emphasizing durability and structural integrity, with styling cues inspired by the Initium concept.
Advanced Interior Features: The cabin boasts dual 12.3-inch displays, AI-powered voice controls, and enhanced comfort amenities, including reclining front seats with leg rests and increased rear passenger space.
Digital Side Mirrors: Replacing traditional mirrors, the Nexo is equipped with digital side mirrors, providing improved aerodynamics and a modern aesthetic.
Safety Enhancements: Hyundai aims for top-tier safety ratings by incorporating comprehensive protection features, ensuring peace of mind for drivers and passengers.
Increased Hydrogen Storage: The vehicle’s tanks can store a greater volume of hydrogen at higher pressure than its predecessor, contributing to the extended driving range.
Regenerative Braking System: A 2.6-kilowatt-hour onboard battery, rechargeable through regenerative braking, enhances energy efficiency and overall performance.
Commitment to Hydrogen Mobility: The second-generation Nexo underscores Hyundai’s dedication to diversifying vehicle electrification strategies, including fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), alongside battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrids.
Anticipated Global Availability: Hyundai plans to introduce the new Nexo to global markets within the year, reflecting its commitment to advancing hydrogen-powered mobility worldwide.

Nexo’s design is heavily influenced by the Initium concept model. Both the front and back have grid-style lighting inspired by Hyundai’s ‘HTWO’ (Hydrogen for Humanity) branding, while the bumpers have H-shaped inserts finished in a contrasting silver tone that stand out against the darker body cladding. Four HTWO light units, shaped like the letter ‘H’ in Morse code, are mounted above the insignia on both the front and back.
Black accent fender flares add to the vehicle’s aggressive, off-road appearance. The side profile has geometric window lines with sharp edges, and the C-pillar is noticeably thick, producing a visual break in the glass area and a more unique appearance. Other outward features include sleek door handles, aerodynamic 18-inch wheels, a slanted roofline, an integrated spoiler, front and rear diffusers, and more.
Given recent model announcements, the interior feels familiarly Hyundai, with features such as generative AI in the infotainment’s voice assistant, car to load technology, and a fuel cell route planner in the navigation system that maps fueling locations. Hyundai has also integrated a large head-up display that reacts to road data, in line with automotive industry trends.
A new motor system based on third-generation (eK) drive motor standards supplements these improvements by improving PE system power and battery capacity. As a result, these enhancements lead to a shorter 0-100kph acceleration time, which is reduced from 9.2 seconds to a minimum of 7.8 seconds, ensuring exceptional acceleration and smooth overtaking capabilities.
