Nepal Experienced Two Earthquakes in Quick succession, With the Strongest Being 5.5 Magnitude

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring Center, the initial tremor of magnitude 5.2 occurred at 8:07 p.m. local time in the Jajarkot district, Nepal followed by a greater 5.5 magnitude earthquake at 8:10 p.m.

Two earthquakes slammed western Nepal within three minutes of each other on Friday evening, according to authorities.

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring Centre, the initial tremor of magnitude 5.2 was reported at 8:07 p.m. local time in Jajarkot area, followed by a greater 5.5 magnitude earthquake at 8:10.

Both earthquakes had their epicentres in the Panik region of Jajarkot district, some 525 kilometers west of Kathmandu.

The earthquakes were detected in surrounding regions, including Surkhet, Dailekh, and Kalikot in western Nepal. Despite the severity of the earthquakes, there are no early reports of deaths or serious damage.

Nepal is located in a seismically active zone and is subject to frequent earthquakes. The region remains on high alert, with officials keeping an eye out for any aftershocks or potential structural damage in vulnerable districts.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers at 7.52 p.m. (local time). No early reports of damage have surfaced.

The earthquake in Nepal occurred days after a massive 7.7 magnitude quake devastated Myanmar on March 28. Over 3,000 people were murdered, 4,500 were wounded, and 341 are still missing.

The earthquake, which was felt powerfully in neighboring countries such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, and portions of India, caused huge fissures in roadways and collapsed structures.
